Police Registration Rules (Form C and FRRO Process for Foreigners in India)
If you're a foreign national staying in India for more than 180 days, you may be legally required to register with local police authorities. This process is managed by the FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) and begins with the submission of Form C by your landlord or hotel.
Who Needs to Register?
- Foreign nationals with long-term visas (employment, student, research, medical, etc.)
- Foreigners from certain countries (e.g., Pakistan) regardless of stay duration
- Any foreign national whose visa or entry endorsement explicitly requires registration
What Is Form C?
Form C is an online form that landlords, hotels, or accommodation providers must submit within 24 hours of a foreign national’s arrival. It alerts local authorities of the foreigner's presence.
How to Complete FRRO Registration
- Visit the Bureau of Immigration FRRO portal
- Create a profile and fill out the application form
- Upload necessary documents (passport, visa, proof of residence, photos, etc.)
- Schedule an appointment or request an online interaction
- Await registration certificate/RC issued digitally
Registration Timeline
- Registration must be completed within 14 days of arrival in India
- Late registration can attract fines and legal consequences
Consequences of Non-Compliance
- Fines and penalties
- Possible visa cancellation or deportation
- Denial of future visa applications
Important Tips
- Keep copies of all submitted documents
- Follow updates on FRRO website—rules change periodically
- If your address changes, update FRRO immediately
