New Eligibility Requirements

As of 2025, the minimum age to apply for a non-transport vehicle license remains 18 years, but applicants must now complete a verified digital identity check through Aadhaar-based KYC. For commercial licenses, the minimum age is 20 years, with additional training proof mandatory.

Mandatory Driver Training

All new applicants must undergo driver training at a government-certified driving school. Private lessons are no longer acceptable. Training must include:

Revised Driving Tests

  • Reverse Parking: You must demonstrate the ability to safely and accurately reverse into a designated parking space, which is crucial for urban driving.

  • Emergency Stops: This involves stopping the vehicle quickly and safely in simulated emergency conditions without losing control or endangering others.

  • Basic Vehicle Maintenance Knowledge: Applicants are now tested on their understanding of routine vehicle upkeep, such as checking engine oil, tyre pressure, coolant levels, and understanding dashboard warning signs.

If a candidate fails the driving test twice, mandatory retraining at a certified driving school is now required before reapplying. This new system aims to improve road safety by ensuring only well-prepared and responsible drivers are licensed.

Renewal Rules

Licenses must be renewed within one year before or after expiry. A digital eye test certificate is now required. Renewals after one year will require a fresh test.

  • Consequences of Delay: If you fail to renew your license beyond the one-year grace period, you will be treated as a fresh applicant. This means:

    • You must retake and pass the driving test.

    • You may be required to undergo a refresher training course at a recognized driving school.

    • Additional documentation, including updated proof of identity and address, may be needed.

This new system ensures that drivers remain physically capable and legally compliant, reducing risks on Indian roads.
